Each year, ALB invites an independent judging panel of senior and expert legal industry leaders from various sectors corresponding to the diverse list of award categories. ALB is pleased to introduce some of the distinguished judges. The rest of the panel will be revealed on the evening of the virtual awards.
Alison Tsai
Legal Counsel, Asia Pacific
Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group
Alison is Asia Pacific Legal Counsel at Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group and oversees and manages all legal issues affecting the Group in Asia Pacific. Alison advises and works closely with other departments to advance Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group’s long-term business objectives while protecting its legal rights and interests, in particular working with Development to sign new hotel management deals for the group.
Alison also chairs Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group’s Global Diversity and Inclusion Council and co-chairs Women in Law Hong Kong.
Alison is a Hong Kong and New York qualified solicitor and is conversant in English, Cantonese, Mandarin and basic Korean.

Mizuho Securities Asia Limited
The Mizuho Financial Group is a global financial institution with total assets of over US$2.1 trillion, which provides banking, trust banking, securities and other financial services. Mizuho Securities Asia is the principal securities and investment-banking arm of the Mizuho Financial Group in Asia ex Japan.
James joined Mizuho Securities Asia in 2014 as a member of its Executive Committee and the Head of Legal and Compliance, covering Global Markets, Global Syndication and Global Investment Banking businesses. Prior to joining Mizuho, James held similar positions with other financial institutions covering proprietary investments, derivatives, equities and fixed income sales and trading, restructuring and advisory matters. James was previously a corporate finance lawyer in private practice and is qualified in England and Wales, Hong Kong and Australia (NSW). He holds a Master of Laws in Compliance and Regulations and is an alumnus of Macquarie University, the University of Hong Kong and Harvard Business School.
Sharyn Ch'ang
Global Counsel, PwC
Vice President, ACC Hong Kong
Sharyn is Global Counsel for PwC, based in Hong Kong. She is the 2020 winner of the Asian Legal Business Hong Kong In-house Lawyer of the Year, and the 2021 winner of the Asia Legal Awards ACC Outstanding Achievement Award for her contribution to the Hong Kong in-house legal community.
Sharyn started her career in Australia, in an innovative profession-leading legal technology role and was then appointed as the first female Associate to Justice Michael Kirby AC CMG, President of the New South Wales Court of Appeal. After joining Baker McKenzie as a solicitor, Sharyn was persuaded to move in-house to IBM as their first Australasian IP attorney. She has enjoyed a career since then spanning private practice, in-house roles and public sector appointments in Sydney, Singapore and Hong Kong.
Career highlights include being a partner at EY, and senior legal positions with Gilbert & Tobin, Silicon Graphics and Deloitte. Sharyn was also the foundation director in a public sector IP policy and external relations role representing 9,600 Australian educational institutions, has been a non-executive director of an Australian software engineering company, Chair of the Licensing Executives Society (NSW); and Ministerial appointee to the Australian government's Advisory Council on Intellectual Property.
Sharyn is Vice-President of ACC Hong Kong, and has been an active leader and mentor in the Hong Kong in-house legal profession for almost a decade.
Jeremy Lee
Head of Legal and Compliance, Asia
Bouygues Construction
Jeremy is the Head of Legal and Compliance of the Bouygues Construction Group in Asia managing a diverse team of legal and commercial experts across 13 different legal jurisdictions with a demonstrated history of working in the construction industry, property development, facilities management, engineering and energies sector.
Jeremy and his team have been recognised in Legal500 GC Powerlist - Hong Kong Teams in 2018 and 2019.
In addition, to his core responsibilities, Jeremy also serves as a Board Director of various companies within the Bouygues Construction Group as well as a member of the Group Legal Committee.
Jeremy is an active contributor to the wider legal community and has over 20 years of diverse international experience in Multi-Jurisdictional Legal/Risk Management, Corporate/Commercial Law, Complex Negotiation, Strategic Planning, Merger and Acquisitions, Arbitration, Construction Law, Dispute Resolution, and Risk Assessment.
Joe Sevack

Joe is the General Counsel and Head of Legal at Evolution-U and a Managing Director of BC&D Advisors. He has over 25 years of experience advising banks, sponsors, borrowers and issuers on complex debt and equity financings and restructurings, buyers and sellers on mergers and acquisitions and investments, and companies, financial institutions and funds on structuring and governance issues, regulatory compliance and interactions with regulators. Joe has regularly been recognized by his clients and peers as a leading lawyer in major industry publications, and has practiced at several leading firms including Cravath Swaine & Moore, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Paul Hastings and Troutman Pepper.
Julien Chaisse

Julien Chaisse is Professor at the City University of Hong Kong, School of Law. He is an award-winning scholar of international law with a focus on the regulation and development of economic globalization. He has published numerous well-regarded and widely cited books and articles, and his scholarship has been cited by international courts/tribunals, as well as U.S. Courts.
As a leading scholar in the field of international economic law, Dr. Chaisse sits on the editorial board of several high-impact international journals. He is also an experienced arbitrator and a sought-after consultant/expert to international organizations, governments, multinational law firms, and private investors.
Dr. Chaisse is an active member of the World Economic Forum (“Global Future Council on International Trade and Investment” and “Tax and Globalization Working Group”). Dr. Chaisse is also an advisor & partner to the United Nations ARTNET on FDI, member of the Academic Forum on ISDS, and Advisory board member of the Asian Academy of International Law (AAIL).

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
ELIGIBILITY
How do I know if I am eligible to make a submission?
We highly encourage all firms, individuals and in-house teams to submit, as we have numerous award categories to choose from. We welcome both past participants and newcomers to join the submission for the awards.
Is self-nomination permitted?
Yes, we accept self-nominated submissions. We also accept third-party submissions, should you wish to nominate an external party or vice versa.
Is there a fee required to make a submission in the law awards?
No, there is no fee payment required for you or your firm/team to make a submission.
TIMELINE OF EVENTS
When will the finalists and winners be announced?
The shortlist of finalists will be released around 4-8 weeks prior to the awards ceremony. The winners will be exclusively announced at the awards ceremony in Sep 2021 in Hong Kong.
NOMINATION PROCESS AND ASSESSMENT
How are the finalists chosen?
Asian Legal Business will compile all of the submission entries, and the ALB editorial and research teams will extensively review each submission to ensure the criteria are met in order to advance to the shortlist of finalists. We stress that this process is fair, impartial and not subject to external influences.
How are the winners chosen?
Once the shortlist of finalists have been announced, an independent judging panel will review and select their top three choices for the award categories they are assigned to. The scores for each award category will be tabulated, and the individual/firm/team with the highest score will be announced as the winner.
What are the award categories that I can take part in?
Any law firms, in-house teams or individuals may take part in multiple award categories if appropriate. The researchers reserve the right to move entries from one category to another if they feel it appropriate. The researchers’ decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into.
Who will be on the judging panel for ALB Hong Kong Law Awards?
There will be an independent judging panel of at least 25 senior and expert legal industry leaders to review the submission materials. The judging panel will be selected on the basis of their expertise and knowledge, and will be comprised from various sectors to correspond to the diverse list of award categories. A partial list of judges’ names will be released prior to the awarding ceremony, and the remaining judges will be revealed on the evening of the awards.
What will my contact information/my client’s information be used for?
All contact information provided will not be disclosed to external parties; and will only be seen by our ALB research team and the judges panel. We keep the information on record internally, in case we need to contact you or your client regarding any questions or discrepancies in the submission form.
Where will my name/firm name/team name be published if we are a finalist or winner?
As a finalist and/or winner, your firm/team/individual name will be published in ALB awards materials and print magazine. For more information, please contact us.
Is my submission confidential?
Any information you submit will only be reviewed by the ALB team and independent judging panel, whose names will be published. The material submitted will only be disclosed to the above; if there is any information that is strictly confidential, please mark clearly on the nomination form. Though we do our best to maintain the security of the information you provide, any information you transmit to us is done at your own risk and Thomson Reuters is not responsible for any unauthorized transmission of information.
